Donna

Antoine had certainly given me a lot to think about. If I was honest, I found it all a little daunting. In reality, I was in control of the fate of three peoples’ lives, plus my own. That was a huge responsibility. Admittedly, the thought of bonding with Antoine aroused me, even the taking of blood. I was very afraid of the twenty-four hours afterwards, though.

“I have a question for you now.” He’d stopped at the bottom of the steps.

“Sure, ask away.” I smiled. “I think you’ve earned the right to ask me something after all my questions to you.”

“What did you do for work?”

“That’s not what I expected. I was in finance. Very boring, but it paid well… until Gustav put an end to it.”

He stared out to sea, then back at me. His lips curved into a half-smile that was beginning to be one of my favourites.

“What? Do you have another question?”

“Yeah, I do.” He ran his hand down the length of my arm, he lifted my hand to his lips and kissed it.

I almost lost my train of thought at his gentle touches.

“Sorry, I lost focus there for a minute.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yes, you did. So, your next question?”

“What would you like to do if you had the chance?”

“I’d love to grow my own fruit and veg and have a wildflower area. I guess I’m all about conservation.” I closed my eyes to stop my tears falling.

“Donna? What did I say?”

“Nothing you said. There’s a reason I want this now more than ever. My parents loved their garden and had an amazing re-wilding area.”

“That’s an easy solve. There’s plenty of space out the back of my property. You can use as much of the land as you like.”

My heart warmed a little more at Antoine’s sweet words.

“That means a lot to me. If I could do this, it…” I shrugged, unable to explain what I needed.

“It would bring you closer to your parents and help with the grieving process?”

“That’s exactly it. I need something to remember them by, you know?”

He kissed my forehead and pulled me against him, his hands going to my hair. “Then we’ll get right on it. Oh, and you may have a helper.”

“You?”

He looked anxious. “I’d do anything for you, you know that. But I’m the person who can even kill weeds.”

I laughed. “Don’t worry, I can teach you. So, who’s the helper?”

A warm smile touched his lips. “Jeanie. She loves her garden. I can’t think of a more perfect person to help you.”

“I’d like that. So, do you have any other hobbies apart from being a petrolhead?”

His cheeks went pink.

“Oh, are you blushing right now? What is it?” I asked, clutching at his T-shirt. “Do you knit, do crocheting, or something else?”

He tried to look annoyed, but I could see the grin lifting his lips. “No. It’s ice cream.”

Oh, if I didn’t like this guy before, I certainly did now.

“What? As in making your own?”

“I have a state-of-the-art ice cream maker. And I love to experiment with different flavours.
